c.200,000 to 100,000 BC. A pleasant Paleolithic Mousterian (Neanderthal) Bifacially worked Ovate flint hand axe found some years back on Overstrand Beach, Near Cromer, North Norfolk and from an old Norfolk collection. Nicely worked from a large Honey / Toffee / Grey coloured flint flake. Unusually the maker left a protruding area of flint on the underside, most likely on purpose, as this axe fits well in the right hand and the protuberance sits nicely in the palm of the hand, and with the right thumb resting in a large flake scar on upper face of the axe this affords a good and comfortable grip of the axe in use. As the hand axe was a beach find it possesses some light marine accretion to parts of it surface (not detracting and somehow adding to its appeal). A few minor knocks and some light surface smoothing from its thousands of years in the sea, otherwise totally intact and in nice overall condition with appealing colouration.
