c.950 A.D. A rare and excellent Viking bronze "Tongue shaped" Strapend featuring an interesting Double headed Battle Axe design, found in Lincolnshire many years back and from a Kent collection. Of cast bronze form with the design deeply and expertly hand carved into the upper surface, this consists of a large central double headed axe design, tree like designs within each axe blade, a raised tear drop shape either side of the axe and 4 groups of 3 pellets in each quadrant of the upper surface. Two holes at the butt end for fixing to a leather strap with small rivets. Most likely gilded or silvered once but now merely a dark bronze tone. Intact and in very good condition with a very bold design. A rare, interesting and appealing Viking artefact, 35mm x 20mm.
