c.7th Century A.D. A rare Early Anglo Saxon rectangular plate brooch with punched and inscised decoration, found in Hertfordshire. A rectanglular main body with protruding "Fleur-de-lis" like terminals on each corner, inscribed line borders either side of 5 punched and scribed dots and annulets in a row. Probably once silvered or gilded but now just patinated bronze. Pin hinge and catchplate on reverse. Pin missing otherwise brooch is in excellent condition, of good metal with very nice surfaces and an attractive overall shiny dark patination. A very nice and unusual Saxon brooch, 33mm x 20mm.
