c.900-950 A.D. A rare and unusual Viking iron key found in Yorkshire many years back and from a Durham collection. Of typical Viking form with the tear drop shaped handle loop, narrow shank and the simple key blade with its fuctional edge at 90 degrees to the shank. [These keys were used in one of the earliest forms of padlocks (see last image) and when inserted and rotated the blade edge would compress a back-swept sprung tang on the padlock hoop allowing it to then be withdrawn from the pad lock. When the hoop was pushed in again the tang would spring out again locking the hoop in place until unlocked by the key again]. Some very minor surface roughness around key hoop otherwise totally intact and in very good overall condition with a pleasant overall dark patination, a rare and seldom offered Viking item, 64mm long x 18mm at deepest.
