c.8th / 9th Century A.D. A rare Anglo Saxon carved and decorated bone knife handle found in the early-mid 20th Century on a known Anglo Saxon artisans site in Ipswich, Suffolk and from an old Essex Collection. Clearly carved and shaped with added engraved decoration on either side, one side featuring a zig-zag design of triple lines along its length, the other side of the handle featuring a different design of two vertical banded 5-line decorations. Handle bifurcated at the thinner end to accept the iron blade, piece of blade fixing end lost in antiquity otherwise complete and this sizable bone handle is in very good condition with sound surfaces. Anglo Saxon bone knife handles seldom appear for sale so this is a rare chance to add a good specimen to your Anglo Saxon collection, 135mm long x 28mm deep at handle end x 23mm thick
