c.8th / 9th Century A.D. A rare Anglo Saxon carved bone knife handle found in the early-mid 20th Century on a known Anglo Saxon artisans site in Ipswich, Suffolk and from an old Essex Collection. Clearly carved and shaped to form a gently tapering cylindrical handle, a socket bored at the narrower one end to accept a narrow iron blade (, feint traces of which still remain embedded in the socket. Tiny split at blade end from the expansion of the corroded iron blade tang otherwise handle  in very good condition for ancient bone with nice smooth and sound surfaces.
