Third Intermediate Period: Late 21st to Early 22nd Dynasty c.950 to 850 B.C. A rare heiroglyphic segment from an Ancient Egyptian painted wooden sarcophagus. A thick segment of Ancient Cedar wood from the top of one of the sides of a Egyptian wooden sarcophagus, to the surfaces of which Gesso (plaster) had been applied which was then richly painted with depictions of Egyptian Gods and Hieroglyphs citing prayers for the afterlife. This segment also features a carved rectangular socket through the centre, into which the top of the sarcophagus would have once located using wooden tabs. The inner side of the segment has much remaining painted Gesso featuring five complete or partial but clear hieroglyphs painted in red, black, white and blue pigments on an yellow base colouring. From an old Northern Irish collection and this piece was checked, dated and read in October 2019 by Dr.E.O'Connell, Duty Curator of the Department of Egypt and Sudan at the British Museum, London. Dr.O'Connell stated that the Polychromy on the yellow ground suggested a date of Late 21st to Early 22nd Dynasty and although the hieroglyphs do not constitute a complete word, it can be restored as once reading "......ntw.w (Gods).....". Some yellow painted Gesso also remains on upper surface and a small piece on the outer side as well. In good sound condition for Ancient Cedar and the painted Gesso is also sound and of good colouration. A rare chance to obtain a segment of a painted Egyptian Wooden Sarcophagus, 132mm long x 60mm deep x 50mm thick
