Lower Paleolithic (MIS 11 - 9) c.410,000 to 324,000 BP. A rare Lower Paleolithic Acheulian "Greensand Chert" Trihedral hand axe found some years back in the Ridge Pit gravels at Romsey, Hampshire and from a Hampshire Geologists collection. This very sharp, pristine fully flaked trihedral handaxe is uni-facially fashioned from from multi-coloured "Greensand Chert" with distinct patches of blue chalcedony throughout which are especially noticeable on one side; it is highly likely these chalcedony patches caught the eye of the hominid maker of this tool. Well defined and still sharp side blade edges plus a good undamaged functional tip. In excellent overall condition with an attractive colouration and a lovely old surface ageing / patination, a large, tactile and appealing Lower Paleolithic hand axe, 145mm long x 95mm wide x 37mm thick
