c.8000 - 6000 B.C. A rare Mesolithic Portland Chert flaked hand axe fashioned from a large core detached Chert flake and excavated close to the famous Culverwell habitation site, Portland Bill, Isle of Portland, Dorset and from a Hampshire Geologists collection but originally hailing from an older collection amassed in the 1970's. Clearly worked and well defined, with a pleasant overall patination further enhanced with some light iron oxide highlights, a good and rare example from a famous Mesolithic site, whilst this type of axe is known in Danish Mesolithic cultures, it is comparatively rare in the British Mesolithic, 90mm long x 68mm wide x 28mm thick.
