c.1st/2nd Century A.D. A rare Roman bronze "Hippocampus" Fibula / Brooch found in the 1990's close to the River Thames, London and from an old collection of Thames area finds.The "Hippocampus" was a mythical creature, part horse, part fish which dragged the chariot of a Roman god across the night sky. The brooch would have originally been filled with coloured enamels and once likely silvered or gilded, but now aged solely back to bronze. Head and small piece of tail lost in antiquity plus iron pin missing (as is typical for Roman brooches), otherwise complete and in reasonable overall condition with a dark olive green patina. Intact "Hippocampus" brooches can readily fetch £300+ so this is a reasonable and very affordable example of this Rare Roman brooch, 30mm long x 14mm at widest,
