c.12,000 - 8,000 B.C. A rare Upper Palaeolithic - Mesolithic period carved and polished Bone Awl / Burin found in Northfleet Kent, just a mile or so from the famous Early Palaeolithic site of Swanscombe, Kent. Fashioned from a split animal leg bone and hollowed out to form a natural placement for the thumb whilst holding it, a distinct functional point has been carved and shaped and this awl would most likely have been used for making holes in animal hides so they could be stitched together to make clothing etc. Intact and lovely condition with good surfaces and a pleasant shiny surface patination and ageing, a nice and seldom offered Stone Age artefact, 83mm long x 24mm at widest tapering to 7mm at point, 15mm at thickest point.
