SOLD
c.3rd/4th Century A.D. A scarce and unusual hand modelled terracotta Roman childs toy animal excavated some years back in the West Midlands alongside other Roman artefacts and from a Staffordshire collection. Somewhat stylistic in form; clearly animalistic although unclear as to exactly what animal it relates to but possibly a crocodile or even a sea monster who knows!. A vertically pierced hole towards its head implies that it may once have had another figure smaller mounted on it or it was once affixed to something else. Certainly an unusual and intriguing little item, intact and in very good condition with no damage or restoration, an unusual addition to any collection of Roman artefacts, 59mm long x 18mm high x 16mm wide.
