c.1st Century A.D. A scarce and unusual Roman bronze clothing toggle fastener excavated in Essex and from a London collection. A complete Roman bronze/copper alloy cast one piece button-and-loop fastener in the form of a twin-ring-headed shank attached to a transverse oval-shaped toggle with pointed terminals. The two rings are where the toggle would have been sewn to the garment and ovoid head would then have been passed through a button hole or loop on the other side of the garment. Totally intact and in very good condition with a brownish surface patination, approx.25mm long x 18mm wide x 7mm thick,
