c.1800-1500 B.C. A scarce Early Bronze Age baked clay Spindle Whorl found in Eastern Germany and from a German collection. This spindle whorl was hand formed from clay, with a reed or stick then pushed through the centre to form a central hole and then baked hard in an open fire. The resultant clay weight was then fixed to the lower end of a wooden shaft to which natural wool was then attached at the top and the shaft and weight was then spun to spin the wool into yarn for weaving. The spindle whorl is intact and in very nice condition for its age with just some blackening on one side where it was baked in a fire. A decent example of an Early Bronze doemstic item, 32mm tall x 34mm diameter.
