Devonian period c.420-360 million years ago. Blastoids were an extinct relative of the sea urchin, protected by ornate interlocking radial plates made from calcium and unlike an urchin Blastoids were attached to rocks or the seabed on an elongated stem of calcium discs and filter fed on plankton using tube feet tentacles. This fossil example is from an old Victorian fossil collection and accurately shows the intricate nature of the interlocking radial body plates for this very unusual prehistoric sea creature, a scarce an interesting addition to any fossil collection, 67mm x 52mm x 30mm
