c.3rd/4th Century A.D. A scarce type of Roman bronze figurative clasp from a casket or small chest found many years back in North Yorkshire and from an old Yorkshire collection. The figure although typically stylised in execution, is in the form of a tall thin standing figure with small truncated arms by its side, skillfully hewn from a single piece of bronze with all details chip carved. These figures usually have a small loop at the back of the base for fastening but this is not evident on this example however it is possible the thicker base plinth effectively engaged between two small prongs to fasten the casket lid. Intact and in nice overall condition with decent surfaces and a pleasant dark green / brown surface patination. 55mm high x 9mm wide x 8mm deep
