c.4th-3rd Century B.C. A small but pleasant Ancient Greek black glazed terracotta pedestalled Salt Bowl (Salter). From the Greek colonies in Campania, Southern Italy. An attractive salt bowl standing on a small pedestal base, which would have been a common site on Ancient Greek dining tables as salt was a vital and highly prized commodity. Shiny black slip ware, faded to a reddish hue in parts on the underside; tiny rim chip and a few areas of minor rubbing to glaze from its time buried in the earth, otherwise intact, in very good condition and a pleasant example of the type, Ex Old West Country collection (amassed in the 1970's/80's), 58mm diameter, 28mm high.
