MIS13 - MIS11 c.531,000 to 420,000 B.C. A small but pleasant Lower Palaeolithic "Mode 1" Pebble hand axe found on the banks of the River Stour at Harkstead, Suffolk and from an old Suffolk collection. Well worked for such an early tool and fashioned from a small flint cobble of amber coloured flint with original cortex remaining over much of its surface for grip and as is typical for "Mode 1" choppers,  just a few large strikes to one end to form the characteristic "S" shaped main chopping edge. An attractive old Palaeolithic coloration and patination, a pleasant example of this very early Paleolithic tool, 63mm long x 48mm wide x 23mm thick
