c.2500-2200 B.C. A superb Neolithic votive polished stone axe head originally unearthed in Sussex many years ago and from an old Essex collection. Expertly fashioned from a nice fine grained dark stone and smoothly and painstakingly polished over its entirety (using a harder polishing stone, coarse sand and water) with a perfect blade edge. Obviously intended for votive or deposition purposes as blade edge perfect and unused and the axe too small to be of any real use as a tool. A tiny old knock to one corner of blade edge (not detracting) otherwise totally intact and in excellent condition with lovely smooth surfaces and a pleasant surface ageing and patination. An appealing and tactile little polished Neolithic axe, 58mm long x 39mm wide x 14mm thick.
