Mid-Late Acheulian period c.200,000 to 500,000 B.C. A truly colossal and heavy (1.4kg), superb quality Acheulian Stone Handaxe found c.1950/60's in the desert near Zaggora, North Africa and from an old West Country collection. An early but expertly worked Palaeolithic handaxe fashioned from a most attractive toffee/honey coloured hard stone, very nicely shaped and symmetrical with a well defined functional point. The axe has a gentle overall smoothing and surface ageing from its many millennia buried in the earth plus the axe is now also imbued with a very appealing old desert patination. Old label on one side. Totally intact and in excellent condition for such an early piece, a very pleasant and tactile axe. Truly a mammoth axe to hold and very rare in this size, most likely used for smashing open the leg bones of large prey in order to extract the bone marrow, a fantastic and imposing piece, plastic display stand included, 247mm long x 120mm wide x 47mm thick [Note: Postage & Packing will be slightly higher on this item due to its size and weight]
