c.300,000 B.C. A very attractive Early Paleolithic "Acheulian" pointed flint hand axe originally a river find from the Southampton area in the early 20th Century and more recently from an old Canadian lithic collection. Clear working and a wonderful overall Toffee & Honey coloured patination, nice ageing with some water smoothing to surfaces which further enhances its tactile nature and overall appeal. An old but sympathetically undertaken restoration to the very tip, most likely by the original finder in the early 20th Century but otherwise totally intact and in lovely overall condition. An old ink inscription "Southampton, England" on one side of butt end. An appealing and reasonably priced example of its type 133mm long x 70mm wide x 34mm thick.
