SOLD

c.3rd/4th Century A.D. A very large and decorative Roman Military bronze belt stiffener applique originally excavated in Germany and from an old London Collection. Of typical bow tie shape but a much larger than normal example, very ornately decorated over its surface with engraved designs of a central sunburst design flanked by intertwined lotus flowers and pellet borders. [Roman leather was quite soft so these decorative plates were rivetted along the length of the belt as a form of decorating, to allow flexibility but also at the same time give strength and rigidity to the leather]. Probably once gilded or silvered but now just exhibiting a pleasant overall brown surface patination, an appealing and impressive example, 70mm long x 32mm wide.
