Late Mesolithic - Early Neolithic c.7000-5000 B.C. A very large and excellent flint "Petit Tranchet" arrowhead found in North Yorkshire in the 1950's/1960's and from an old established Nottinghamshire collection. Skillfully fashioned from an attractive banded light and dark grey flint, copiusly worked on either side to form the characteristice "V" shaped body with a bifacially flaked wide chisel tip, the edge still sharp to the touch. Tranchets arrowheads were effectively reverse mounted with the pointed end fixed into the arrow shaft and the wide razor sharp chisel tipped edge designed for causing maximum wounding and blood loss in order to bring down larger prey much more efficiently. This is a much larger than normal example with attractive colouration and good surface ageing, a nice example, 45mm long x 38mm across blade edge.
