Kimmeridgian layers, Dorset. Jurassic Period c.166-155 million years old. A very large and excellent Pliosaur vertebrae (Stretosaurus / Liopleurodon Sp.) dredged up close to Portland Bill, Dorset and from a Hampshire Geologists collection. This huge prehistoric marine reptile grew to well in excess of 6 meters in length is considered as being the apex predator in the Jurassic seas with a huge elongate head full of sharp conical pointed teeth, a short robust neck, large bulbous body with short powerful tail and four large paddle like limbs which could propel it at considerable speed when chasing its prey. This vertebrae is a much larger than usual example and is in very nice condition with clear bony processes remaining on either side where the ribs would have attached. A choice example of the type with good detail and definition, 122mm wide x 108mm deep x 58mm thick
