c.2nd/3rd Century A.D. A very large and impressive Roman bronze Lunular (Crescent) Pendant or Lunulae as they were known as by the Romans. These were protective amulets in the form of a crescent moon and were given to and worn by Girls to protect them from Evil forces during childhood. When a girl got married the Lunluae would have generally been discarded or destroyed along with her toys to affirm her passage into adulthood. This Lunulae is a particularly large example, in good condition with just some pitting to surfaces from its time buried in the soil and still complete with its original suspension loop at top. The pendant would most likley have been gilded or silver plated when new but now just back to its base bronze. This example could easily be mounted on a chain or lanyard and worn again if required. Found by a metal detectorist in Germany. A nice and exceptionally large example of the type, 54mm wide x 57mm high to top of suspension loop.
