c.1st / 2nd Century A.D. A very large and rare Roman terracotta gaming dice found many years back on a known Roman site in North Yorkshire and from an old Scottish collection. Of fairly basic form, hand modelled from a solid cube of red ware fired terracotta with the numeric dots impressed with a reed or stick prior to firing. Feint impressions can still be seen of the fingerprint impressions from the person that originally made the dice. Some very light surface dirt as excavated and a couple of minuscule knocks from its time buried in the earth otherwise totally intact and in very good overall condition, solid with good surfaces. A much larger than normal example of the type and a nice Roman item, approx. 29mm square.
