Late Anglo Saxon period c.9th/10th Century A.D. A huge and superb Late Anglo Saxon carved bone "Nålebinding" needle found many years ago in Norfolk and from an old Sussex collection. This is a particularly large and impressive example of a carved bone needle used for "Nålebinding", a very early form of crocheting and for making garments and blankets etc. It has been skilfully carved shaped and polished from an animal leg bone and features a large grip end with a hole drilled through it through which woollen yarn would have been threaded. Totally intact and in excellent condition with a most attractive old colouration and a shiny patination from long term use, a choice example of the type, 190mm long x 23mm at widest x 5mm thick
