c.2nd Century A.D. A very large, heavy and impressive terracotta handle from a huge Roman Amphora found at a major Roman Villa site in Suffolk in the early 20th Century and from an old Essex collection. This large and impressive example most likely hails from one of the colossal amphora's that were originally used to both transport and store the fermented fish sauce that the Romans were so fond of, once empty the amphora's would then have been smashed and pieces buried in rubbish pits. Of very thick robust form the handle with good surfaces and is in excellent sound condition overall, 140mm high x 102mm wide x 167mm deep, strap handle approx. 50mm diameter.
