c.2nd Century A.D. A very large, heavy and impressive terracotta rim and neck fragment from a huge Roman Amphora found at a major Roman Villa site in Suffolk in the early 20th Century and from an old Essex collection. This large and impressive example most likely hails from one of the colossal amphora's that were originally used to both transport and store the fermented fish sauce that the Romans were so fond of, once empty the amphora's would then have been smashed and pieces buried in rubbish pits. Of very thick robust form the rim and neck fragment has good sound surfaces and is in excellent condition overall, 180mm diameter x  113mm deep, lip of rim approx. 48mm wide.
