c.60,000-40,000 B.C. A very large, heavy and superbly worked Mousterian (Neanderthal) flint hand axe from the Dordoigne, Central France. A good sized and heavy hand axe fashioned from a pleasant banded tan and light grey coloured flint / Chert. A largely flat but still worked underside and a steeply domed upper which has been expertely and copiusly flaked and re-touched to form excellent and still sharp blade edges all around the perimiter for cutting and chopping with the axe then tapering nicely to a very well defined and still sharp functional tip for digging and boring. A lovely axe in superb condition throughout and possessing a most attractive colouration and surface ageing, a very nice example of the type, 188mm long x 88mm wide x 40mm thick.
