c.7th / 8th Century A.D. A very nice Anglo Saxon bronze "Caterpillar" (Equal Armed Ansate) brooch found some years back near Brentwood, Essex and from an Essex collection. Of typical form with a cast humped bow with lateral raised ribs along its length, and remiscent of a caterpillar arching its body. Pin hinge at top end of underside and small catch plate towards bottom end. Pin missing otherwise brooch is totally intact with decent surfaces and in very good condition with an attractive overall shiny dark green patination, a nice example of the type, 52mm long x 8mm wide x 20mm at deepest.
