SOLD
Lyme Regis Lower Lias Shales, Jurassic period c.180 million years old. A very rare shale matrix slab containing nine juvenile Icthyosaur Verterbrae and with associated rib fragments, excavated in the 19th Century in Lyme Regis, Dorset and from an old Victorian fossil collection. [An Ichtyosaur was a large marine predatory reptile that in some ways resembled a giant Dolphin but with a vertical tail, huge eyes and a enormous jaw full of sharp teeth, see last photo for reconstruction]. The specimen is well prepared to display the bones to their best and on the reverse is the original ol Victorian label presumably from the original fossil vendor and preparer, "Butler, Brompton Road, London" and the old hand written description "Lower Lias Shales, Ichtyosaur Vertebrae". Slab 132mm wide x 88mm high x 20mm thick, specimens such as this rarely appear for sale so this is a rare opportunity to add a portion of an Ichtyosaur to your own collection,
