c.60,000 to 50,000 B.C. A wonderful Neanderthal (Mousterian) Jasper small hand axe found at the famous site of Fontmaure, France and from and old French collection amassed in the 1930's and 40's. In typical, chunky, if slightly abstract form, but with a distinct and well defined bi-facial blade edge on one side of the axe, further re-touched and pressure flaked to both enhance and sharpen it. Natural indents in the tool fit the fingers and thumb of the right hand perfectly allowing a sturdy grip of the axe, this is less with the left hand. A very attractive and appealing piece with the superb colours that only Jasper possesses with good old surface ageing and patination. A lovely and tactile Neanderthal Jasper tool, 77mm wide x 62mm deep x 35mm thick.
