Upper Paleolithic period c.50,000 B.C. An attractive Mid Paleolithic "Acheulian" flint hand axe found many years in the River Creuse at the famous Prehistoric site of Le Grand Pressigny, Touraine, France and from a Hampshire Geologists collection. Fashioned from a large thick flint flake, expertly and bi-facially worked to form distinct point and functional axe blades; area of original pebble cortex left on upper side of butt end to aide gripping in the hand. An attractive Paleolithic axe in a lovely toffee / honey coloured flint so typical of this area. A very tactile tool with some lovely surface smoothing and ageing from many millennia submerged in the River Creuse, intact and in excellent condition with a lovely old collection shiny surface patination, A very pleasing Acheulian flint hand tool from a famous location, 82mm long x 73mm wide x 22mm at thickest
