Middle Kingdom c.2040-1640 B.C. An attractively mounted group of 3 x Ancient Egyptian wooden funerary boatmen found at Thebes (modern day Luxor) in the early-mid 20th Century and from an old Northern Irish collection. These figures would have once formed part of a larger group, all hand carved from Cedar wood, painted with pigments and then placed, seated in a large model wooden boat complete with oars and sail; the entire assemblage then being placed in a high status Middle kingdom period tomb as both an offering and also a means of transport in the afterlife. The group consists of one larger figure still with one arm in situ, plus two smaller ones, head and torso only. All figures are in very good condition overall for their great age with all still possessing the original skin tone, and black pigments on the cropped wigs. A few old wood worm holes as is normal for these items, but all pieces were checked over, fully conserved and treated some time back in the Belfast Museum. The figures have all been fixed to a large oval custom made mahogany mount with a felt underside and a specially engraved brass label / date plaque on the front, altogether a very well presented group of these seldom offered Ancient Egyptian figures, one figure 85mm tall, another 88mm tall with the largest being 100mm tall. Stand measures approx. 150mm wide x 110mm deep x 26mm thick.
