SOLD
c.6th Century A.D. An early Anglo Saxon gilded chip carved bezel fragment from a large ornate brooch found in Kent and from a Kent private collection. The original complete brooch must have been quite a large, important and impressive high status item and this fragment features a recessed circular bezel (10mm) which would most likely have once held a coloured glass stone or garnet with carved rope work designs flanking it; much of the original gilding can is still evident. Even this fragment clearly demonstrates the skill of the Saxon metal smiths in hand carving these intricate pieces aprox 19mm x 19mm, supplied in display box
