Cromerian Interglacial period (MIS 13) c.524,000 to 474,000 years old. An early Lower Paleolithic Flint Unifcaial hand axe found many years back at the famous Paleolithic site of Warren Hill, near Mildenhall, Suffolk, a site rich in Early Paleolithic habitation sites which has yielded more artefacts than any other Paleolithic site in Britain. From an old Norfolk collection. Fashioned from a large pebble flake of dark black/blue flint with elongate whitish flecks throughout, synonymous with this famous Prehistoric site. Smooth underside but worked on upper surface to produce a triangulated hand axe with secondary retouching to further define the edges of main functional point. Wider butt end of axe still retains the pebble cortex to aide grip in the hand during use. Intact and in very good condition for its great age with a pleasant old surface colouration and a cream patination on the unworked side, an interesting and very early Early Paleolithic hand tool from a notable prehistoric site. 80mm long x 70mm wide x 30mm thick
