Early Paleolithic c.800,000 years old, an excellent and rare, European "Oldowan Industry" pebble hand axe fashioned by Homo Erectus and this particularly nice example was found on the foreshore of a lake in Viana do Castelo, Portugal many years ago and hailing from an old Scottish lithic collection. A very nicely worked and defined example with the rounded pebble butt forming a comfortable grip in the hand and the functional blade edges and tip of the axe formed by three successive percussive strikes to one side only (as often seems to be the norm with these early pebble hand axes). Intact and in excellent condition with just some very light water smoothing to percussion ridges, a very nice and seldom offered example of one of the earliest man made tools, 92mm long x 72mm wide x 38mm deep
