c.4000 to 2500 B.C. An excellent & scarce pair of Neolithic "Pollisoir's" (polishing stones) once used for smoothing and putting the final surface finish on polished stone axes originally found in Sussex many years ago and allegedly found in close proximity to a polished axe so probably once belonging to the axes owner. Both made from river pebbles expertly split in two to provide perfectly flat abrading surfaces and these would have then been painstakingly and repeatedly rubbed over the pecked axes in order smooth and polish the axe surfaces, possibly employing the use of water plus fine grits or sediments to gently abrade the stone away. The polishing surfaces of the Pollisoirs consequently now possess beautifully smoothed and nicely aged surfaces and both are very tactile pieces. In many ways these simple Neolithic hand tools are much rarer than the axes they helped produce, an interesting addition to any lithic collection, one Pollisoir measures 52mm x 44mm x 14mm thick, the other 29mm x 26mm x 9mm thick, the pair only
