c.200,000 to 100,000 BC. A good Palaeolithic Mousterian (Neanderthal) "Levallois Industry" flint hand axe found in 2017 in the Hallowtrees area of the River Orwell foreshore and from an old Ipswich collection. Clearly worked from a thick triangulated flake of a pleasant mottled flint, in turn struck from the top of a large pre-prepared flint core (i.e.Levallois), smooth underside but clearly worked on upper surface to form the axe blade edges on either side with a raised medial plateau on the top. Totally intact and in very good overall condition with lovely surface ageing and the most attractive Golden "Old Palaeolithic" patination A well defined, most attractive and very appealing Early Neanderthal flint hand axe, approx. 100mm long x 66mm wide x 25mm thick
