Upper Palaeolithic period c.40,000 to 10,000 B.C. An excellent and rare Upper Paleolithic worked bone Awl / Boring tool, found in known Paleolithic contexts near Northfleet, Kent and from an old Kentish collection. This skillfully modified animal bone features a distinct elongated main body with a deliberately cut and ground angular functional tip for the piercing animal hides etc or boring / engraving smaller wooden items. The butt end of the tool is wider and makes clever use of natural dips in the bone structure to allow the fingers to sit in and facilitate a strong grip of the tool in use. Totally intact and in excellent sound condition with good old surface ageing and shiny patination, an excellent and well worked example of a rare Paleolithic bone tool, 85mm long x 28mm deep x 14mm thick.
