Upper Palaeolithic period c.40,000 to 10,000 B.C. A large, excellent and rare Upper Paleolithic Dihedral worked bone Awl / Boring tool, found in known Paleolithic contexts near Aylesford, Kent and from an old Kentish collection. This skillfully and deliberatley modified animal bone features a distinct elongated main body with a deliberately oblique cut and a ground angular functional tip for the piercing animal hides etc or boring / engraving smaller wooden items. The butt end of the tool is the joint end of the bone and much wider effectively forming a bulbous handle that sits firmly in the palm of the hand during use allowing significant pressure to be applied. Totally intact and in excellent sound condition with good old surface ageing and shiny patination, a good sized and excellent, well worked example of a rare Paleolithic bone tool, 100mm long x 38mm wide at butt, 32mm deep at butt, much of body c.17-19 mm wide.
