c.9th/10th Century A.D. An excellent and robust Viking socketed iron Adze originally hailing from Germany and more recently from a U.S. collection. An Adze was a laterally mounted craftsman's tool, much like an axe but with a gently curved cutting blade. The blade would have been hafted onto an "L" shaped wooden handle and were generally used for stripping bark or the hollowing out and shaping of wooden objects. This particular example has a the flanged open socket very typical of the period. Totally intact and very robust, of good thick iron, with just some very minor surface pitting but otherwise very good condition indeed for ancient iron with stable surfaces, an excellent example of the type, 114mm long x 58mm wide x 25mm thick.
