Product Description

6th Century A.D. An excellent early Byzantine Terracotta oil lamp featuring a detailed Grape vine decoration with bunches of grapes on either side of top surface around a raised keyhole shaped border which in turn surrounds the filler hole and spout for the wick and a typical small up swept handle at the rear of the lamp. These small lamps would have been filled with oil and a wick inserted into the spout, then lit, and would have typically been used in the home much as candles still are today. From an old Hampshire collection. A few tiny chips to raised border around filler hole (not detracting) otherwise in very nice condition overall with good sound surfaces and no repairs, a nice example of the type, 94mm long x 66mm wide x 45mm at deepest
