c.450,000-350,000 years B.C. An excellent Early Paleolithic "Clactonian Industry" flint hand axe / chopper found on the ancient foreshore of the River Orwell, Nacton near Ipswich, Suffolk and from an Suffolk collection. An early worked hand axe prepared from a large thick flint flake struck with original pebble cortex remaining on upper side to aide grip in use, well worked on underside to further enhance the tool and then two large strikes with further re-touching to create the main functional chopping blade. A cleverly fashioned tool, totally intact and in very nice condition with a most attractive "old Palaeolithic" surface ageing and colouration, plus a shiny patination to struck surfaces, a nice and tactile early hand axe, 87mm wide x 77mm high x 36mm thick.
