c.350,000-300,000 years B.C. An excellent Early Paleolithic "Clactonian" pointed hand axe found in Clacton, Essex and from an Essex collection. An early but skilfully worked hand axe prepared from a large flake, struck from the top of a large flint nodule and then a well defined and functional blade and tip then struck away and re-touched. A nice tool with pebble cortex left on the outer grip-side that sits well in the hand with a natural indent in the centre of the axe acting well as a thumb hold. totally intact and in very nice condition with good surface ageing and patination, a very nice early hand axe, 118mm long x 79mm wide x 42mm thick.
