MIS13 - MIS11 c.531,000 to 420,000 B.C. An excellent Lower Palaeolithic "Acheulian" flint pointed hand axe found on the banks of the River Stour at Harkstead, Suffolk and from an old Suffolk collection. Well worked for an early tool and expertly fashioned from a most attractive black, honey and toffee coloured mottled flint. Bi-facially worked but with a largely flat underside; copiously well worked on upper side to form a medial ridge with blade edges either side and a good functional point. Some original pebble cortex remaining on butt end to aide grip in the hand. Some light water smoothing adding to its appearance and making it a rather tactile piece to hold, a great old Palaeolithic colouration and patination, a lovely example of an early Palaeolithic hand axe, 124mm long x 75mm wide x 40mm thick
