(Homo Hiedelbergensis) c.450,000-350,000 years B.C. An excellent Lower Palaeolithic Clactonian uni-facial flint hand axe, originally dredged up from North Sea approximately 20 miles off Clacton, Essex and from an Essex collection. Fashioned from a thick flint flake struck from a large river cobble; flattish underside but well worked on the upper surface to form distinct functional blade edges, a medial ridge and good point; small section of original pebble cortex remaining on upper surface which seems to act well as a thumb grip for use. This pleasant early hand axe is intact and in very nice condition with some gentle water smoothing to percussion ridges, good surface ageing and an attractive shiny old patina. A scarce and appealing early Stone age hand tool, 110mm long x 80mm wide x 56mm thick.
