c.8000 - 6000 B.C. An excellent Mecolithic flint "Tranchet" Adze found in North Yorkshire in 1997 and from an Essex collection. Fashioned from a pleasant beige / fawn coloured flint, very nicely and bi-facially worked and featuring a well defined square tranchet flaked cutting face. This Adze would have been hafted into an "L" shaped wooden handle with Adze facing rearwards and mounted so that the blade edge lay horizontally and it would have most likely been used to craft wood, being used for digging furrows, hollowing out and the fabrication of other large wooden wooden items. A lovely example, totally intact with nice surfaces, a good blade edge and pleasant overall surface ageing and patination, 93mm long x 36mm wide x 19mm thick.
