Neolithic period c.4000-3200 B.C. An excellent and well defined flint axe head found in the early 20th Century at the very famous Prehistoric site of Le Grand Pressigny, Touraine, France. Ex. Maurice Chevais Collection [Maurice Chevais (1880-1943) was a French composer and Inspector of School music teaching in Paris, a pioneer in the history of music teaching in fact and keen collector of French Lithics]. His huge prehistoric collection was amassed from 1910-1935 on his regular visits to the family home near Le Grand Pressigny. This nice axe head is fashioned from the attractive Honey / Toffee coloured flint so synonymous with the area and is copiously worked on either side and features a wide and well defined semi-circular chopping blade. The axe head would have once been mounted into a wooden handle for use and secured using natural tree resin and/or animal sinew. Intact and in excellent condition with a lovely "old collection" shiny surface patina, A pleasant Neolithic axe from both a very notable location and collection, Approx. 92mm long x 55mm at widest.
